What is a Content Management System
describes
Web Content Management System as follows:
A web content management system (WCMS or Web CMS) is content management
system (CMS) software ... for creating and managing HTML content. It is used to
manage and control a large, dynamic collection of Web material (HTML documents and
their associated images). A WCMS facilitates content creation, content control,
editing, and many essential Web maintenance functions. Usually the software provides
authoring (and other) tools designed to allow users with little or no knowledge of programming languages or markup languages
to create and manage content with relative ease of use. ... Administration is typically
done through browser-based interfaces, but some systems require the use of a fat
client. Unlike Web-site builders like Microsoft FrontPage or Adobe Dreamweaver,
a WCMS allows non-technical users to make changes to an existing website
with little or no training.
Simply put: a CMS makes it easy for you to update and manage your
website without having to understand HTML, Web Standards, or any kind of complicated
technology.
One Size Does Not Fit All
Each company and every project has different requirements, scope, focus, and budget,
and so should your CMS system. To that end Trimedia Atlantic Inc utilizes several
different content management systems:
Simple CMS
This is our most basic content management system that allows you to update blocks
of text on your website easily with a
WYSIWYG
(What You See Is What You Get) editor. What that means is that if you can use a
word processing program, you can manage your website.
Benefits
- Easy to use -- If you can use Microsoft Word you can start working
with Simple CMS in a matter of minutes.
- Works with Your Existing Website -- Maybe you already have an existing
website and simply want to make it easier to manage. No problem, Simple CMS only
needs an FTP connection to your existing website, a couple of tweaks to your HTML
and you are ready to go.
- Price -- Simple CMS is focused on allowing you to edit HTML easily.
That is it. You don't pay for features you don't want or won't use.
Limitations
- Features -- The same strength that makes Simple CMS economical
and easy to use can be a draw back. With it's focus on editing HTML, it does not
have all the extra modules that our other CMS systems have.
Small Business CMS
When you need more features than Simple CMS, but don't want to have to learn how
to manage a portal, then you need our Small Business CMS.
Our Small Business CMS package is based on Umbraco, and therefore has the following
features:
- Microsoft Word 2007 Integration -- You can use Microsoft Word 2007
to edit your website, and you can do so even offline. Simply create a document in
Microsoft Word anywhere, anytime, online or offline and when you are satisfied,
click "upload".
- Page Management -- The pages within your website appear within
a directory structure, just like a File Manager. Adding new pages to the site is
as simple as right clicking the parent page (or site root) and selecting "Add Page".
- Content Management -- Umbraco fully supports multi-lingual
content (including services to help with translation), as well as versioning
of content (made a mistake? no problem, just roll back to a previous version
of the document). You can also schedule content, which means you can create
a campaign months in advance and have it appear and disappear on schedule.
- Security -- Umbraco has an advanced role-based security system
that allows you to control access and rights to areas of the website easily. (Great
for creating areas of your site for staff, clients, partners, etc).
Portal Management System
A full portal management system goes beyond just simply allowing you to edit and
manage content to allowing you to not only define the page layout, but what modules
/ functionality goes on each page.
Features
- Complete Control -- Every new page starts as a blank slate, allowing
you to control the layout (via templates) and the content (via modules)
- Module Selection - Out of the box you get: Multilingual HTML Editor,
Announcements, Event Calendars, Blogs, Forums, Photo Galleries, Wikis, Google Maps,
Dynamic Forms (with PayPal integration), Media Players (MP3, FLV, playlists). And
with over 1000 other modules available for purchase and/or development, the options
are endless.
- Skinnable -- One of the key ways on the web to give your customer
a sense that you are a growing and thriving company is to "freshen" up your website.
With our portal system this is as easy as replacing the "skin" (the look and feel)
of your site, without touching any of the content.
- Banner Advertisements - More and more sites are turning to paid
advertising as a source of revenue. Our portal system comes standard with Google
Adwords, as well as a full banner management system complete with CPC / CPM tracking
and accounting.
When you simply must have the best, with versioned document management (doc, xls,
pdf), content approval workflows, Advanced HTML Form Builders, advanced content
tagging and searching, social networking tools, and a system that was designed from
the beginning to be search engine friendly, then it has to be CMS400. (If you are
thinking of implementing Microsoft Sharepoint, you need to see CMS400.)
